What Is Musubi?

Spam Musubi

So I have some network marketing friends and today saw them posting about some food called Musubi (moo-soo-bee).  Apparently it’s big in Hawaii and so I was curious and wanted to find out what it was all about.

I turn to my good friend Google and I discover that Musubi consists of a fried slice of spam on rice pressed together to form a small block.  This is then wrapped with a strip of seaweed.  It’s typically eaten as a sandwich.  Apparently it’s a popular snack food in Hawaii.

While researching Musubi I found out that Hawaiians consume more Spam than any other population in the world.  Who knew?  This was a new fact for me.  I would have never thought of Spam being so big in Hawaii.

I also found out that Spam was originally called “Hormel Spiced Ham”.  Apparently no one liked this name so they had a contest at a New Year’s Even party with a $100 prize for someone to come up with a new name.  The new name, SPAM, was conceived by Kenneth Daigneau who won the contest.  Kenneth was an actor and brother of the then Hormel vice president, Ralph Daigeau.

I’ve always wondered how SPAM had come about.  Well, now I know.  And I’ve also learned how popular SPAM is in Hawaii.  Now I have something to look forward to when I get to visit beautiful Hawaii.  It’s one of the things I will do when I travel there with the money I’ve earned from my online business.

Have a great day!
